Elijah Clemens Nelson Jr., was a veteran of WWI, serving in France. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1915, from the University of Texas, and his Bachelor of Law degree from The University of Texas School of Law in 1921. After graduation from college, he served as Floyd County Judge from 1923 to 1926. He taught a Wayland College in Plainview, Texas, prior to moving from Floydada, to Amarillo, on January 2, 1927. He was Judge of the Potter County Court of Law from March 19, 1931 until it was abolished by the Governor on April 25, 1933. He was Judge of the 47th District Court from January 1, 1935 to December 31, 1939.

David served in the Army Air Corp, as a Navigator on a bomber, during WWII. In 1969, he was severly injured in an automobile accident, which killed his brother James Weldon Standefer. While receiving treatment in the Veterns Hospital in Houston, Texas, and X-Ray technician jerked his neck, which paralyzed him. He was a quadriplegic for the remainder of his life.           John Verne Nelson was 9 years old, and his sister, Velma, was 2, when their parents died. Their uncle, Elijah Clemens Nelson, took them into his home and raised them with his own children. The were educated in Floydada schools. Verne became a Registered Pharmacist, and operated a chain of drug stores in the Amarillo, Texas area.
