William:

I recieved a copy of an article from The Maryville Times, Thursday, June 5, 1924, which told of an annual reunion of the James--Nuchols families. I have included it.

"The annual re-union of the descendants of Elijah James and wife and Wesley Nuchols and wife met at the W.L. James homestead on Tuckaleechee pike on Saturday, June the 1st. where a great time was enjoyed. There is now becoming a great host of these relatives, so much so, that it is impossible for them to keep track of each other by means of visiting, so they decided a year ago to hold an annual reunion... So it is becoming an affair of great interest and they all look foward to the time and prepare to attend and and renew their acquaintance and enjoy the day together.
The day is not spent in idle gossip, but is so planned as to inspire a lofty ambition in the hearts of the younger generation to become good and useful citizens. There are a number of good singers in this crowd and it was a great treat to hear the music both vocal and instrumental, that was furnished on this ocassion.
To begin with, was a song, "Sunbeams" sung by Rosa Bell and Jennie White and Bernice Cathcart, piano accompaniment played by Fate, which was greatly enjoyed by everyone.
This started the ball to rolling and there was one continual round of pleasure and entertainment. There were a number of other songs rendered by the singers in general, then came a speech "The Foundered Cat" by little Miss Clara James. This was a decided hit and greatly enjoyed by all. Next was a reading "The Three Little Graves" by little Miss Alice White. It must be said that Alice did justice to the subject, for it was a spell-binder. Next was a reading by Mrs. J. W. Painter, who, by the way, is quite an artist on the stage. The subject of this reading was "The Mock Wedding." So thoroughly was this reading enjoyed that she was drafted for two other readings during the day.
The program was supplied with a continous selection of songs, but was interrupted for an hour at noon while all enjoyed a bountious dinner. It seemed that there was a abundance of good things to eat and everybody had good appetites. After this noon hour several quartet selections were rendered by Medames C.A. White, J.A. Cathcart, N.N. McGinley and J.W. Painter. Also an instrumental duet rendered by Mrs. Cathcart and little daughter, Bernice, also one by Mrs. Cathcart and Mrs. N.N. McGinley and a trombone selection rendered by James White Jr., accompanied by Mrs. Cathcart on the piano. Then a reading by Mrs. Tom James, "A Barn Elocutionist." This was highly enjoyed by all. Next was a reading, "Bossing a Husband" by Mrs. Glen Wolfe (nee) Nannie Chandler. This was a real treat. Mrs. Wolfe is the only married grandchild of Mr. and Mrs. W.L. James, and she and her husband came from Mooresburg to be present on this occasion.
A short talk was made by the secretary of the society, J.A. Cathcart, outlining the plans and purposes of the organization, who also introduced Mr. Claude Whitehead, who made a stirring speech on "Home, the Foundation of Society." Mr. W.L. James also made a short talk expressing his unbounded pleasure in meeting the relatives and at the way things had been done, considering it a great success. After singing a number of sacred songs, closing with "God Be With You", the crowd departed for their several homes.
Those present were: Mr. Glen Wolfe and wife, of Mooresburg; Mr. E.E. Haws and wife and son Lois, and Charles Warwick of Knoxville; Robert Chandler and wife and six children of Concord; Lee Parker, wife and seven children; Harris Parker, wife and son; W.M. Headrick and John Williams, of Hubbard; C.A. White, wife and six children; J.A. Cathcart, wife and two children; N.N. McGinley, wife and two children; J.W. Painter, wife and two children; T.E. James, wife and seven children; Mrs. Jennie James and son Elijah of Carpenters Camp Ground; Ralph Best, wife and three children; Claude Whitehead, wife and two children; Roy Scoggins, wife and five children; Geo. Partain of Knoxville; Mrs. Joseph Cameron of Knoxville; Theo. Wallace, wife and three children; Nora Hodge, Martha Whitehead, Mr. and Mrs. W.L. James, and Robt. James.

"An Attendant."
