  At 6'5, and 240, I guess I take after Cap'n Nelson. I am also a Captain - for Delta Air Lines. After Playing football at Texas Tech, I served briefly as a graduate assistant coach there. I then joined the Navy and went to flight school. I have been with Delta since 1991. My son, Benjamin David Standefer and daughter Kathleen Michelle Standefer are both business majors at the University of Texas. Ben found the site when I explained to him that he was distantly related to Samuel Clemens. Although my grandmother 100b Virgie Ruth Myrtle Nelson (Gertie, quite a character and a tough old broad) always told me of meeting Mark Twain when she was a very young girl when he passed through Mount Pleasant, Tx for a visit on return from one of his many journies, this site is as close as I have to documentation of relation to him. Cap'n Nelson would have been Virgie Ruth Myrtle Nelsons grandfather, my great great grandfather. Amanda Clemens is my great great grand mother.
   My father Eugene Richard Standefer was John Wayne tough and a bit of a legend around west Texas in the 40s. He too played football at Texas Tech ( quarterback) in 1941 and again after the war in 1946. He was in the Hurtgen Forrest in Germany with the 8th Infantry and was awarded the Bronze Star for laying communications lines across the Roar River (sp?) under live fire for four hours. He was drafted by the Los Angeles Rams of the NFL in 1947. I have his single page ( imagine a single page contract on anything now) NFL Standard Players contract signed by Daniel F. Reeves, former owner of the Rams. He is listed as Gene Standefer on any football related websites although, at least in later years his friends called him "Dick."
   In the small farming community of Plainview he was a jack of all trades. He sold real estate and insurance, had his car dealers license, promoted wrestling, owned a lawn service and a driving range and managed Plainview Country Club, among other things. His big brother, David Nelson Standefer, my uncle, went by "Nelson." My brother Eugene Richard Standefer Jr. sells PVC pipe in Lubbock, Tx. My sister Valarie Jo Standefer Zeeck is an attorney in Tacoma, WA. Her husband Dave is currently President of the American Society of Newspaper Editors. You might see him occasionally on C-span. Their boys are both in "West Wing" school at George Washington University, so you see, if we both live long enough, we may be related to the President. Anyway, I digress ( starting a long time ago). Just wanted to say thanks for caring enough to maintain such a comprehensive history. If you need or want any info about the Texas Standefer's, I know them all and have pictures and stories on every one. They're good folks.
